<p>OPTICAL FIBER CONNECTOR The present invention relates to an optical fiber connector. The connector is comprised of a connector body having a frustum-shaped mating portion which tapers from a large diameter to a point along the connector body to a smaller diameter end surface. An aperture extends longitudinally and coaxially along the connector body. A single optical fiber is located in the aperture and is affixed to the connector body. The single optical fiber terminates near the smaller diameter end surface of the mating portion. A transparent flexible contacting member is provided, extending over the end of the optical fiber and a portion of the end surface of the mating portion. The contacting member has a dome-like shape. Problems related with variations in the physical size of the connector are substantially eliminated by using the frustum-shaped mating portion. The latter maintains the symmetry and centering of the optical connector resulting in accurate and reliable fiber alignment and consequently low coupling loss.</p> |
