An internal combustion engine is designed in such a way that an intake passage is provided for the intake stroke, which passage produces two swirl currents rotating in opposite directions for the air-fuel mixture, the mixture being ignited at or close to the end of the compression stroke. For this purpose, a swirl generating device is provided which has two groups of fins which are fitted in such a way that they generate opposing twin swirl flows.
