In a long-term heat store using change of state in the form of a container or pool, there are integrated in the floor thereof heat exchangers which are connected to a heat pump and, preferably, to a solar collector system. The extraction of heat from the heat exchanger can be periodically adjusted and heat is supplied for the purpose of thawing. In order to permit intermittent extraction of heat, the time period (ZA) for thawing is subordinate to a thermostatic control which terminates the thawing operation when the heating medium reaches a specific return temperature (RTL), and switches over once again to the extraction of heat. <IMAGE>
