The device comprises an opaque panel in which apertures (12) are formed, arranged in a matrix, with each of which apertures a flap (13) is associated, which may mask or uncover the aperture by the action of an electromagnet (20) on the permanent magnet (24) which it carries. A light source (30) is situated behind the panel and a light source (32) is in front of and above the panel (this may be the sun). The front face of the panel is non-reflecting, as is the face which the flap shows when it masks the aperture. The other face of the flap is reflecting. The device provides better reading of the displayed information, both in daylight and in artificial light, and permits a smaller number of operating elements. <IMAGE>
