A gas type circuit breaker is provided which comprises an arc extinguishing chamber containing an arc extinguishing fluid which is adapted to be pressurized by an arc generated at the time of opening of the contacts, and a pressure applying device having a cylinder and a piston and adapted to coact with the opening operation of the contacts, whereby the volume of the arc extinguishing chamber can be varied by a mere change in configuration of the inner surface of the piston so that both an improvement in the breaking characteristics with regard to small electrical currents as well as an increase in the breaking capacity far a large electrical currents are made realizable.
