A machine for breaking up bales or rolls of hay and similar strawlike material has a stand, in which is mounted a drum 1 with projecting knife blade 3. The knife drum 1 is placed under a grill 9, such that the knives 3 as the drum 1 turns can move up against the grill spaces to work the end of the hay bale or roll 32. In order to achieve a machine with low power consumption, it has a container casing 12, which can be driven about a horizontal axle 16 and about a stationary bottom 8, in which the grill 9 is set. The casing has dog elements 18, 19, 20 for entraining the straw 32. The grill can be placed eccentric relative to the axle or rotation 16 of the casing 12, and the knives 3 can be distributed about the drum 1 along a helical line. <IMAGE>
