PURPOSE:To accurately search for data on a tape, by detecting a data code while the tape is in a reverse state, allowing the tape to run in the reverse state for a prescribed time, then setting a regeneration state and searching for the data. CONSTITUTION:When the search key on a console desk 5 is operated, VTRs 1A and 1B are placed in a reverse state for a prescribed time to read time codes. For this purpose, data ''0'' is sampled and detected at specified intervals, and after a prescribed number of the data ''0'' are detected, that a digit of the time of the time code as a discrimination signal is not ''0'' is detected at a prescribed frequency and that the low-order digits of the code are not all ''0'' is detected simultaneously.
