1. 5-pyridinyl-2(1H)-pyridinone compounds for use as intermediates in preparation of cardiotonically effective 5-pyridinyl-2(1H)-pyridinone compounds with the general formula: <IMAGE>, I where PY means 4- or 3- or 2-pyridinyl, possibly having one or two alkyl-substituents with 1-6 carbon atoms, R means hydrogen, alkyl with 1-6 carbon atoms or hydroxyalkyl with 2-6 carbon atoms, and Q means cyan, hydrogen, amino, alkylamino with 1-6 carbon atoms, dialkylamino with 1-6 carbon atoms in each alkyl moiety, -NHAc, where Ac means alkanoyl with 1-6 carbon atoms or alkoxycarbonyl with 1-6 carbon atoms in the alkoxy moiety, or -NHCH=C(COOR4)2, where R4 means alkyl with 1-6 carbon atoms, characterized in that they are compounds with the general formula: <IMAGE>, I where PY and R have the above-given meaning, and Q' means carbamyl, halogen or nitro, or acid addition salts thereof.
