A process is described for rendering industrial waste materials inert, especially metallurgical wastes containing copper and ammonia nitrogen, by solidifying their aqueous sludges and/or solutions and/or suspensions which are mixed with at least one solid, substantially dehydrating pulverulent material (silica, sand and foundry earths, etc.), with at least one solid pulverulent hydraulic binder (cement, fly ash, etc.) and/or with at least one solid pulverulent inertising material (clays, alumina, etc.) and with a quantity of formaldehyde not greater than 10 % of the total material added, and then granulated or pelletised in order to obtain a solid material having a pH value of between 7 and 13 and a moisture content not greater than about 35 % by weight. The material obtained turns out to be acceptable for disposal in controlled landfills, in compliance with the legislation and regulations existing in this respect. In particular, the process assures stable inertisation of the copper ion in the presence of ammonia nitrogen. Moreover, economic advantages are obtained through the at least partial use of self-reclaiming solid waste materials.
|
