PURPOSE:To improve the surface properties such as surface hardness, chemical resistance, etc. of a plastic article, by carrying out the plasma polymerization of a gaseous mixture of a specific silicon compound and oxygen on the surface of the article. CONSTITUTION:A coating film containing a silicon compound is formed on the surface of a plastic article such as polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, etc., by carrying out the plasma polymerization of a gaseous mixture of (A) a silicon compound of formula (R<1> is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; R<2> is methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, acetoxy or Cl; n is 0-4) (e.g. tetrachlorosilane, dimethyldimethoxysilane, etc.) and (B) oxygen gas on the surface of said plastic article. |
