PURPOSE:To facilitate integration and extract directivity of each component of input pattern simply and in real time by providing plural directional component extracting sections of uniform structure and extracting directional components of many directions. CONSTITUTION:A line of codes of (1), (0) obtained by scanning a character and a pattern to be recognized are inputted to an input terminal 1. A series of codes for a scanning line inputted from the input terminal 1 are outputted as parallel codes for each scanning line in a preprocessing section 2. By providing plural directional component extraction sections 3, directional components of many directions can be extracted. When plural directional codes extracted from the directional component extraction section are inputted simultaneously, overlapped codes are outputted in a directional component superposing section 4 and a directional code is determined in a directional component determination section 5.
