PURPOSE:To coat a fiber without increasing loss of optical transmission by using a coating material composed essentially of a highly viscous liquid or solid compd. having a polymerizable -C=C- group, adding a reactive diluent to it, hardening them by irradiating of UV rays or electron beams, and giving tensile elastic modulus to a specified value or more. CONSTITUTION:An optical plastic fiber is coated with a solvent-free type material composed essentially of a highly viscous liquid or solid compd. having polymerizable -C=C- groups, such as polyester acrylate, diluted with a reactive agent, such as ethylene glycol di(meth)acrylate, copolymerizable with said compd. and hardenable by irradiation of UV rays or electron beams. They are hardened with said radiation to give 1,000-30,000kg/cm<2> tensile elastic modulus to the coating material. Since the optical fiber is not damaged by the heat generation during hardening, the optical fiber thus obtained is prevented from increase of optical transmission loss, and creap under load, and enhanced in strength. |
