<p>There is provided a combustion unit which includes a cylindrical mantle capable of providing a site at which most or all of the actual combustion can take place. This allows the mantle to absorb much of the heat of combustion and to become a source of radiant energy in the form of infra-red heat. By surrounding the mantle with a lighttransmitting but imperforate member, such as a silica quartz tube, the combustion and the products of the combustion can be confined, while allowing a very large portion of the generated heat to pass out of the unit in the form of radiant energy. Also, some of the heat of combustion would be transferred as sensible heat through conduction, and the flue ducting from the downstream end of the combustion unit can be directed in such a way that it allows additional heat in the flue gases to be transferred to the air to be heated. The combustion unit herein defined can be used in an infra-red heater arrangement, and can also be used to heat liquid such as water.</p> |
