Apparatus for the combustion or gasification of solid fuels comprises a fluidized bed chamber containing a gas distributor (11) through which fluidizing gas is introduced at a greater flow rate at one side (12) of the chamber than at the other side (13), and an asymmetrically disposed outlet (9) is the space above a fluidized bed (6). The plenum chamber (3, 4) may be divided by a partition (5), or the number or size of the apertures or nozzles in the distributor (11) may vary along its length. The apparatus may contain one or more baffles (14) in the headspace; in preferred embodiments such a baffle contains means for introducing granular fuel to the bed.
