<p>For each pel signal comprising only 1 bit of information in and image a 16 bit word is available. The signals are processed so that the 1 bit of information from each of a surrounding patch of pels is inserted into the 16 bit word. The information on the surrounding patch provided by the pattern of bits in each signal is used to further process the signals to force the original bit to one or zero dependent on that pattern and also on the type of effect in the image required. The processing can be used to produce contraction or dilation or a combination of the two in the white parts of an image. To contact a white image, any white pel with a black neighbour is forced to back, whilst to dilate an image, any black pel with a white neighbour is forced to white. If the process of contractions is applied to figure 1 white pel 3, which may be due to noise, disappears and black area 2 grows resulting in white area 2 becoming two separate areas. The technique is useful in the scanning microscopy of metallic specimens for non- metallic inclusions. <IMAGE></p> |
