In a coin counter for an automatic vending machine having coin-operated release levers, a prestressable summing device is provided. The summing device is connected to an inhibiting device by means of gearwheels. The summing device is triggered by means of coin-operated release levers. The rotational travel of the gearwheel regions is limited by means of a rack and a pawl. The displacement travel of the rack is adjustable by means of stops. The rack can be brought into and out of engagement with a gearwheel by the coin-operated release lever, and furthermore with a pawl which is in engagement with the pawl wheel while the rack is out of engagement. The number of racks corresponds to the number of coin-operated release levers.
