PURPOSE:To improve the output of an engine by fixing the ignition timing at a predetermined operation area in the engine judging the type of gasoline in use to control the ignition timing based on the detection result of the knock occurrence by a knock sensor. CONSTITUTION:The presence of knock occurrence is judged by a knock judging section 2 based on the output signal of a knock sensor 1, the necessity of ignition timing transfer is determined by an ignition timing transfer determining section 3 based on the output of the judging section 2, and the determined mode is stored in a memory section 4. The determining section 3 has a pulse generator 31, a counter 32, and a timer 33, and it outputs a high-level signal when a predetermined number of knocks have occurred in a predetermined time. Then, the ignition timing is transferred to the advance side or to the delay side based on the knock occurrence frequency when driving with gasoline used at the optional ignition timing characteristic, and the ignition timing is fixed at a predetermined position during the engine start or under a light load. |
