PURPOSE:To obtain a steel material for a piston ring having superior wear resistance and heat sag resistance at the service temp. of the piston ring by adding specified amounts of C, Si, Mn, Cr and one or more among W, V and Nb to steel. CONSTITUTION:The composition of a material for a piston ring is composed of, by weight, 0.5-0.8% C, <2% Si, <=2% Mn, 10-15.5% Cr, one or more among 0.3-3% W, 0.1-1% V and 0.01-0.3% Nb, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. A treated surface layer is not required to be formed on the sliding face of the material, and the material can be simply manufactured by adding one or more among said W, V and Nb to conventional martensitic stainless steel.
