PURPOSE:To improve a demultiplexing rate and the effect as an optical coupler by connecting plural short linear straight optical waveguides successively, alternately, and slantingly at a small angle in opposite directions and thus forming a flection parts. CONSTITUTION:Plural short straight waveguides 3 are connected successively, alternately, and slantingly at the small angle in the opposite direction to form the inflection parts 4. In this constitution, each mode of light propagating in an optical mixer 2 is hardly influenced at straight parts 3, but photoelectric force is transferred between among difference order modes at the inflection parts 4 where the propagation direction changes abruptly, thereby causing mode coupling. In this case, part of the photoelectric force is radiated out of the optical waveguide to cause loss, but the angle of bending, the number of the inflection parts 4, and the length of the straight parts 3 are adjusted so that the operation effect, light loss, and permissible value which are required for the mode mixer are satisfied to some extents, thereby improving the effect of the optical coupler. |
