PURPOSE:To detect a jam independently of the length of an original if the jam exists within the limitation determined by a reading scanner, memory or the like by detecting the original length at the time of paper feeding. CONSTITUTION:When an original is carried, a sensor 14 detects the original, the sensor 14 turns on and a control circuit 1 counts up motor pulses during the ''H'' output of an ON signal (c) to detect the original length. When the sensor 14 does not detect the original at the supply of a motor pulse (g) longer than a distance from the original setting position to the sensor 14 to a motor, and when a sensor 15 does not detect the original at the supply of motor pulse (h) longer than the difference between the distance from the original reading position to the sensor 15 and the original length, a jam is generated. If motor pulse (i) longer than the original length is applied after the detection of the sensor 15, the jam is generated at the detecting of the original by the sensor 15.
