PURPOSE:To separate and purify particularly organic compounds, having close boiling points, and inseparable by distillation industrially and advantageously at a low cost with saved energy, by using beta-dinaphthol as a host compound, and utilizing the property of forming a clathrate complex from the organic compounds. CONSTITUTION:beta-Dinaphthol is used as an active component for separating a specific one from a mixture of two or more organic compounds. The separation is carried out as follows, For example, the beta-dinaphthol is added to the mixture of the organic compounds, and if necessary the resultant mixture is heated to form a clathrate compound, which is if necessary cooled to separate and collect the formed crystals of the aimed compounds. An amine, cyclic ether, etc. may be cited as the guest compound forming a clathrate with the beta-dinaphthol. The molar amount of the beta-dinaphthol to be used is preferably 0.5-1 of that of the guest compound in the mixture containing the guest compound.
