For efficient regeneration of a solid, e.g. ion exchange resin, in a column it is necessary to pass regenerant liquid slowly, but uniformly so that its front moves evenly. These requirements are simply reconciled by having means defining a space 28 at one end of the column with an inlet 30 and an outlet 32. Regenerant is passed at a high rate through the inlet 30. The flow through the outlet 32 is controlled so that most (e.g. 80%) of the flow exits that way, and a desired slow flow passes through the column. Preferably the volume is first flushed by passing the full flow out of outlet 32. <IMAGE> |
