The present Patent Application describes reaction products of higher fatty acids with dialkanolamines having 2 to 3 C atoms in the hydroxyalkyl radical by heating the starting components to above about 130 DEG C in a known manner, fatty acids or fatty acid mixtures being used in which at least 40 % by weight comprises a saturated alkyl radical having at least 19 C atoms, their preparation and use of these reaction products. The softener formulations obtained using these reaction products give, when used on fibre materials, in particular textiles, a particularly voluminous, surface-smooth and ample soft handle.
