Lower olefins are prepared according to the invention from methanol and/or lower alcohols with the aid of a catalyst in the form of synthetic zeolites containing aluminium and boron in an atomic ratio Si/Al of 20 to 3000 and Si/B of 1 to 5, where the reaction can optionally be carried out in the presence of a diluent.
