PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic scale having high accuracy and good efficiency by irradiating a high-energy beam onto a base material and welding magnetic material powder to the base material thereby forming magnetic graduations thereon. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic graduations 11 are successively formed at a width t1 and interval t2 on the magnetic material 1. For example, the magnetic graduations of the width t1=5mu and interval t2=5mu are obtd. by controlling the pitch feed when an irradiation treatment is executed with a YAG laser condensed to 8mu beam diameter under the supply of gaseous hydrogen in the stage of welding Sm2CO17 powder of 300 mesh onto a 18-8 stainless steel base material. The magnetic scale obtd. in such a manner is set at the gap 10mu of a detection head and 0.1V output is obtd. when an FeNi detector is disposed to face the magnetic scale and magnetic detection is executed. The direct detection with an extremely high SN ratio is possible.
