A stretchable insulating tape (17) contains a layer of plastic film (4) and at least one layer of a porous, impregnable foil material. The later layer is divided into sections (11) no more than 5 mm in length by means of transverse cracks (12) with a slit width (B) of no more than 1 mm. When the stretchable insulating tape (17) is applied it is subjected to tensile force, at which time the slit width (B) increases and the insulating tape is elongated primarily due to the expansion of the slits. This elongation does not significantly reduce the thickness of the stretchable tape.During the procedure for manufacturing the aforementioned stretchable insulating tape (17), laminated tape (2) is subjected to stretching by first passing a first driving roller (9) and then a second driving roller (10), which has a greater periphery speed than the first driving roller (9). Stretching causes the formation of several transverse cracks (12) in the porous foil material, while the plastic film (4) remains intact.<IMAGE> |
