PURPOSE:To detect stably a write or read position by counting a pulse corresponding to the slide speed of a magnetic card, and deciding a write or read start point to the magnetic card. CONSTITUTION:When the card is inserted into the card reader, the card is held by a magnetic head 21 for writing and reading data on the card and a roller 22. By feeding the card the roller 22 rotates, and a slit disk 3 is also rotated. In accordancewith the rotation of the slit disk 3, the pulse is outputted from a phototransistor 4, and inputted to a modulator and demodulator circuit 18, whereby a timing clock signal for writing data A is outputted. Simultaneously it is inputted to a comparator 19 and a counter 20, and a card detecting signal and a write start position signal C are outputted.
