A navigation system including a sextant (11) having a telescope (12), a fixed horizon mirror (14), a movable index mirror (15) mounted on an index arm (16) and a stepping mirror (22) which is actuable on receipt of control pulses to cause pivotal movement of the index arm (16), the number of pulses applied to the stepping motor (22) being proportional to the angular movement of the index arm (16) and thus altitude of the heavenly body being observed. A microprocessor controls the application of pulses to the stepping motor (22) and is programmed with information relating to position data of celestial bodies and is arranged to calculate in accordance with known navigational formula, latitude and longitude from the signals applied to the stepping motor (22) and time data. |
