PURPOSE:To secure the matching of level differences between heads in a recording mode regardless of the width of this recording mode, by using a pair of flying erasion heads as a recording head for a pilot signal used for matching of said level differences of both heads. CONSTITUTION:The 1st and 2nd heads H1 and H2 for record/reproduction are attached to a rotary drum 1 via electrostrictive elements 3 and 4 and with about 180 deg. angle space secured between both heads. Then the 3rd and 4th heads H3 and H4 for erasion are attached to the drum 1 with about 90 deg. angle space secured to the heads H1 and H2 respectively. Then the pilot signal used for matching of level differences between both heads H1 and H2 in a record mode of video signals is recorded by the heads H3 and H4 which revolve in advance of the heads H1 and H2 over a prescribed section. These pilot signals recorded by the heads H3 and H4 are reproduced by the heads H1 and H2. Here the track widths of head H3 and H4 are larger than those of heads H1 and H2. Therefore the guardbandless recording is secured with the pilot signals only despite the guardband recording in an SP mode, etc.
