The overvoltage suppressor has an insulating-material housing (1) which encloses a stack of cylindrical varistors (10) which are arranged coaxially with respect to one another. The outer surfaces of the varistors (10) are at least partially embedded in the insulating-material body (11). An annular space (13) is cut out between the insulating-material bodies (11) and the inner wall of the insulating-material housing (1). In the case of this overvoltage suppressor, the insulating-material housing (1) is intended to be reliably protected against bursting in the event of an electrical breakdown along the varistor stack. This is achieved in that a portion of the outer surface of each varistor (10) and the associated insulating-material body (11) bound a pressure-relief channel (12) which extends between the current connections (8, 9) of the overvoltage suppressor, and in that the annular space (12) is filled with an electrically insulating, heat-conducting material. <IMAGE>
