The S enantiomer of (trimethylsilyl) methyl 2-hydroxypropionate, of the formula <IMAGE> is prepared by a novel process in such a way that the S enantiomer of lactic acid, of the formula <IMAGE> is reacted with chloromethyltrimethylsilane, of the formula Cl-CH2-Si(CH3)3 (III), at temperatures between 50 DEG C and 120 DEG C in the presence of N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine.
