The invention discloses an electric field detector which comprises means for generating linearly polarized light (50), a polarizing element including a Pockel's cell (201) made from Z-cut quartz which transmits the polarized light toward a Z-direction and changes the phase difference of two specific oscillations of a crystal in response to magnitude of the electric field. The electric field detector of the invention can be widely used in measuring conditions of an electrical machine.
