Safety valves have hitherto always been designed as angle-body valves. The diversion of flow which occurs when the valve responds due to this mode of construction leads to additional bending moments on the inlet and outlet to the housing, particularly in the case of safety valves with a large nominal diameter. To avoid the deflection forces, which can only be controlled with the use of expensive valve holders, the invention provides a safety valve, the inlet (1) and outlet (2) of which are arranged on opposite sides of the housing (3). An annular space (27) is formed between the outer surface of a hood (30) covering the spring (19) and the inner wall of the housing (3), allowing symmetrical flow through the valve body. <IMAGE>
