The patent application relates to a manual pressing unit, in which a pressing plate is vertically movable in a container by means of a threaded spindle. According to the invention, a comminuting device is rotatably arranged beneath the pressing plate and the threaded has means for actuating the device. A significant advantage is that when refuse is being compacted, for example, a larger decrease in volume can be achieved than is possible with known presses. An important factor is the small size of the container, as a result of which the unit can be used in the home for preliminary separation of kitchen waste and therefore help to solve an urgent international refuse problem. Furthermore, when the unit is used to press fruit, vegetables or berries, a higher yield of juice is provided, as well as a reduction in the amount of space required for the pressed-out material.
