This device consists of an assembly 11 transmitting and receiving radiation 10, fixed adjustably to part 1 of the frame of the machine and to an element 9, 16 reflecting said radiation, fixed to another part 5, 4, of the machine and located opposite said transmitting/receiving assembly 11 at said point 8, the path of the fabric 6, 16 being arranged between said transmitter/receiver 11 and the reflecting element 9, 16.
