In the case of a sliding-ring seal for socketed-pipe connections, the tip end on whose radial outer wall an elastic sealing ring is preinstalled has a centring ring which is located axially at a predetermined distance in front of the sealing ring, or has a retaining ring which is connected to the sealing ring. Both rings, which are used alternatively, preferably consist of a material which is harder than the elastic sealing ring. They engage around the end wall of the tip end, running radially inwards a small amount, and, at the start of their axial extent, have a radially outwardly expanding conical centring surface or, instead of this, have a radially externally located centring curvature, both of which are suitable to ensure adequate centring of the tip end in the socket during installation, by interaction with the inner edge of the socket and/or with that part (which tapers radially towards the shear-load bearing) of the inner wall of the socket of the previously laid pipe.
