Device for severing a safety belt, by means of which belt users can release themselves from the belt in case of emergency. A casing which surrounds the belt at any point contains a through channel which is adapted to the belt cross-section. A severing knife is situated in the casing to the side of the through channel and is fastened to a slide which can be remotely actuated and in an emergency is slid along a casing guide transversely through the belt, causing severing of the latter.
