PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection technique that realizes a desired object capture rate and focus detection accuracy while reducing processing load.SOLUTION: A focus detection device comprises; an image sensor having a plurality of pixels for detecting a pair of image signals from light rays passing through different pupil areas of an imaging optical system; setting means for setting focus detection areas, each comprising pixel lines, consisting of a plurality of pixels arrayed in a first direction, that are arrayed in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction; signal generation means configured to generate a pair of image signals from outputs of the pixel lines of each focus detection area; and focus detection means configured to derive a defocus amount of the image capturing optical system using the pairs of image signals generated by the signal generation means.
