PURPOSE:To promptly and high accurately measure the size of a long scale work, by bringing a sensor of a measuring device-mounting tool rest into contact with the first measuring point in a predetermined position to read the coordinates and again advancing the sensor to be brought into contact with the second measuring point in the opposite side so that the size of the work is calculated from the coordinates of the both points. CONSTITUTION:A turret tool rest 4, mounting a measuring device 3, approaches a work 1, and the measuring device 3, whose touch sensor 3a is brought into contact with the first measuring point of the work 1, reads coordinates of the tool rest 4 to be stored in memory, indexing the tool rest 4 in an escape direction of the sensor 3a to be moved in an opposite side direction to the first measuring point while to the original position to position the sensor 3a in an opposite side to the first measuring point of the work 1. Next the tool rest 4 retracts, and the measuring device 3, bringing the sensor 3a into contact with the second measuring point of the work 1, reads the coordinates of the tool rest 4 to be stored in memory, thus the measuring device 3, by its prepared program, calculates a size of the work 1 to be detected from a coordinate position of the tool rest 4 in the two positions, read value of the measuring device 3 in that time and a probe size or the like of the sensor 3a.
