PURPOSE:To stabilize combustion, to reduce noise and to decrease piston weight, by forming a combustion chamber disposed at a piston upper portion of a two- layer construction comprising a shallow plate portion and a deep plate portion and providing a nozzle for forming a solid flow and a nozzle for forming spray. CONSTITUTION:A piston is provided with a recessed portion at its upper portion to form a combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is formed of a two- layer construction comprising a shallow plate portion 3 and a deep plate portion 4 having a diameter smaller than the shallow plate portion 3 constructed adjacent to the center of the shallow plate portion 3. A fuel injection nozzle 5 is provided with a nozzle 9 for forming a solid flow 9 restraining fine particle making and a nozzle 10 for forming spray 30 promoting fine particle making. With such an arrangement, combustion is stabilized in a low load region and prompt combustion is effected in a high load region.
