PURPOSE:To ensure safety if the using state of a handy reader is abnormal by providing a detection means detecting the contact state of a moving body with respect to the surface of an object and a safety switch disabling the reading action of the moving body when abnormality is detected. CONSTITUTION:The safety switch 50 normally rolls an original on a table 10. However in a free state it interlocks by linking to a coupler bar 52 insulated by a contact type microswitch 51 which drops and is displaced by its own gravity. When rollers 13 and 14 contact the surface of the original 11 and move unit, which means a normal using state, the safety switch 50 is turned ON to set a power source circuit in a closed state, and a normal action is executed. If a user lifts a device main body 12 and operates the switch in that state, the microswitch 51 becomes free, and the safety switch 50 interlocks with the state of the microswitch 51 so as to drop. Accordingly the device main body never operates with the loads of drive motors 20 and 44 separated from a power source E53.
