PURPOSE:To impart weather, heat resistance, etc., to a polymer, by preferentially hydrogenating olefinically unsaturated double bonds in a polymer chain in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst consisting essentially of a dicyclopentadienylhafnium compound under mild hydrogenation condition. CONSTITUTION:A polymer containing olefinically unsaturated double bonds, e.g. copolymer of 1,3-butadiene and/or isoprene and styrene and/or alpha- methylstyrene, etc., is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) one or more of bis(cyclopentadienyl)hafnium compounds expressed by the formula (R and R' are 1-12C hydrocarbon, aryloxy, alkoxy, halogen or carbonyl) and (B) one or more compounds, having reductive ability and containing Li, Na, K, Zn or Mg, e.g. n-butyllithium, etc., at 1/1-1/10 molar ratio (Hf/reducing metal) in an inert organic solvent.
