PURPOSE:To prevent the leakage of slag and gas and to assure the safety of an operation by exerting the gaseous pressure larger than the pressure in a furnace to the joint part between a vessel part for housing a molten metal and slag and a vertical type furnace part installed thereabove from the outside of the furnace. CONSTITUTION:This melt reduction furnace is constituted of the vessel part 2 housing the molten metal 8 and slag 9 and the vertical type furnace part 1 installed to the joint part above said vessel part in such a manner that the furnace part can be attached to the vessel part in tight contact therewith and can be detached therefrom. A flange 15, an annular upright plate 16 erected to the flange and an elastic member 17 such as packing are provided to the circumference in the upper part of the above- mentioned vessel part 2. On the other hand, an annular plate material 14 facing the flange 15 is attached to the circumference in the lower part of the vertical type furnace part 1 to delineate a closing space 19 enclosing the above-mentioned joint part 18. Gas 21 such as CO2, CO or exhaust gas is supplied from a hole part 20 into the space 19. The gaseous pressure G slightly higher than the pressure P in the furnace is thereby exerted to the joint part 18. The slag 9 and the gas in the furnace which tend to leak from the joint part 18 to the outside are pushed back by the gaseous pressure G and the leakage thereof is prevented.
