PURPOSE:To quicken reducing reaction of ore to metal state, by separating oxide ore to be supplied to melting and reduction furnace to lump and powdery ores by a suitable ratio, adding the former and the latter from upper part and to a molten metal or a slag respectively. CONSTITUTION:In melting and reduction furnace composed of a vertical furnace part 1 and a vessel part 2, oxide ore is melted and reduced due mainly to interface reaction between the molten metal 8 and the slag 9, and the obtd. metal 8 is discharged through a tap hole 12. In the method, the oxide ore is separated to lump and powdery ores, further added under the ratio of 50:50-90:1. Further the lump ore is thrown from above the furnace through a lump substance throwing unit 6 providing a screw feeder 6a and stayed for a long period at the interface between the metal 8 and the slag 9. On the other hand, prereduced powdery ore is directly added to the metal 8 or the slag 9 through a bottom blowing tuyere 11, etc.
