In a ventilator at least comprising a breathing air source 1, an inspiration hose 3, a member 4 for connection to the patient, an expiration hose 5 and a PEEP valve 9 generating superatmospheric pressure and having a circular valve seat 6 and a closure body with a circular sealing surface 8, simple manufacture and adjustability of the pressure, coupled with favourable hygienic and ventilation properties are achieved in that the closure body is a floating body 7 which can be vertically lifted off the valve seat 6 by the breathing air stream 10, the closing force of the closure body generating the superatmospheric pressure resulting exclusively from the weight of the floating body.
