The invention relates to new phenoxy benzoyl malonates of the general Formula I, processes for the preparation thereof and herbicidal compositions containing the same. In the general Formula I R1 stands for halogen, cyano, nitro, methylthio, trifluoromethyl or C1-4 alkyl; R<2> and R<3> may be the same or different and represent hydrogen, halogen or trifluoromethyl; R<4> stands for hydrogen, halogen, cyano or nitro and R<5> represents C1-4 alkyl, the two R<5> groups being the same or different.
