A heat exchanger 22 for an apparatus 20 for continuous treatment of liquid waste comprises an insulated, tubular body 24. The insulated, tubular body 24 consists of tubes 120, 126 arranged concentrically and telescopically inside one another with a mutual spacing. The space 132 between the pipes is closed and filled with an inert gas. The surfaces 122, 124, 128, 130 of the tubes 120 and 126 are coated with a hydrogen penetration barrier, which preferably consists of an aluminium iron alloy, nickel or copper, which limits the penetration of atomic hydrogen into the space 132 between the pipes 120 and 126. This atomic hydrogen can be combined to form gaseous hydrogen and bring about a heat loss. The insulated, tubular body 24 is telescopically arranged inside circulation pipes 32, 36 for liquid waste, so that a liquid-treatment apparatus 20 is formed. The heat exchanger is designed in particular to be used in wet oxidation of liquid waste, including municipal sludge in a deep sink. <IMAGE>
