A lubrication system for an internal combustion engine uses a pump driven by a solenoid 3. The pump has a fixed delivery of oil per cycle and the frequency of actuation of the solenoid 3 is controlled in accordance with engine load and speed to provide the required rate of delivery of lubricant. As shown, the pump is a double piston pump in which armature 4 drives tube 11 and hence piston skirts 12,13 which have lost motion connections with pins 20, 21 rigid with tube 11 and the armature. Oil is supplied to the interior of the piston skirts from where it can flow through passages 44 (which open during part of the pump cycle because of the lost motion) to the working chambers 35 to be pumped out past check valves 28, 29. <IMAGE>
