High pressure trap for small particles comprises: (a) a shell (32) for maintaining water (34) beneath the inlet under pressure; (b) a first coaxial wall (42) for confining the synthesis gas and entrained slag to downward flow towards the water, which has a number of passages (45) for directing the swirling flow; (c) a recirculation step for some of the synthesis gas through the passages, using a second coaxial wall (46) between the shell and the second coaxial wall; (d) an annular closing device between the first and second coaxial walls.
