This involves optimising the use of a DC electric motor nearing sticking. According to the invention, to do this the moment at which the commutating rate of the motor becomes less than a given minimum threshold value is detected, and its rotor is systematically afforded a rotation of a fraction of a revolution in one direction or the other if this commutating rate remains in this manner less than this minimum threshold rate for a given time. Application, in particular, to the holding back of a load, and, for example, to that of the drill string of an advancing drilling facility.
